Pickleball Terminology: The Ultimate Glossary for New Players

Pickleball - a funny name for a funny sport, that comes with lots of funny new words. Confused by all the jargon? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Whether you’re just picking up your first paddle or already rallying with friends, understanding pickleball lingo can make a huge difference in your game. Here’s your ultimate guide to the must-know terms in the pickleball world.

1. The Kitchen

No, this isn’t where you make your morning coffee! In pickleball, the “kitchen” is a 7-foot area on either side of the net, also called the non-volley zone. You can’t hit the ball in the air (volley) while standing in the kitchen. It’s a crucial rule to know because stepping into the kitchen can cost you points.

2. Dink

The dink is a soft, gentle shot that lands in the opponent’s kitchen. It’s often used to slow down the pace of the game and make your opponent move around. Mastering the dink can give you a serious edge.

3. Volley

When you hit the ball out of the air before it bounces, that's a volley. It’s important to remember that volleys are only allowed outside of the kitchen. Volleys can be fast-paced and are key to staying competitive in the game.

4. Lob

A lob is when you hit the ball high and deep into your opponent’s court, typically to push them back or catch them off guard. It can be a game-changer when used strategically, especially if your opponent is playing too close to the net.

5. Fault

A fault happens when a rule is broken. This could be stepping into the kitchen while volleying, hitting the ball out of bounds, or letting the ball bounce twice. Every fault gives the other team a point or the serve, so avoid them at all costs!

6. Let

A let happens when a serve hits the net but still lands in the correct service court. In this case, the server gets to serve again without penalty. It’s a do-over, essentially.

7. Serve

The serve in pickleball is an underhand hit that starts the point. You must serve from behind the baseline, and it needs to land diagonally in the opposite service box. The serve is super important in gaining control of the game, so practice it!

8. Side Out

A side out happens when the serving team loses the serve. It signals a change in possession, meaning the other team now gets to serve.

9. Third Shot Drop

This is a soft, controlled shot usually made by the serving team after the return of serve. The goal of the third shot drop is to land the ball softly in the opponent’s kitchen to neutralize their advantage and reset the rally.

10. Paddle

Of course, we couldn’t finish this glossary without mentioning the paddle. This is your trusty tool for hitting the ball. Pickleball paddles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, so choose one that fits your style of play!

Now that you know the basic terms, you’re ready to step onto the court! Pickleball may have its own language, but with this glossary, you’ll sound like a pro in no time. Whether you’re dinking in the kitchen or mastering your third shot drop, understanding these terms will help you level up your game.
